Talk for Writing in P3H
In Primary 3 we are thoroughly enjoying our new Talk for Writing Unit, Hansel and Gretel.
To begin the unit, just outside our classroom was a trail of sweets leading all the way to the outdoor classroom, where we found a witches hat, a letter, a voice message from the witch and the story book of Hansel and Gretel. We loved listening to the story but when we heard what the witches challenge was…..we couldn’t wait to get back into class! Hansel and Gretel ate lots of the Gingerbread House, so our challenge was to work in groups to design and build a new one! We loved working together and being creative! We then had to add adjectives to our house using exciting descriptive vocabulary. This will really help us when we add adjectives to our writing.
Our next session was to create a shared story map. We used pictures, symbols and time connectives to map out the story and then retold the story together. Next week we will make our very own story map to help us write parts of this famous fairy tale.
During Activity Based Learning we rein-acted the story within a tuff tray, used puppets to perform the tale for a pretend theatre, designed a tasty Gingerbread house using the iPads and then made our very own Gingerbread House! Yummy!
Then to really challenge our thinking, we innovated and created a brand new villain to add to our story maps. What fun we had retelling our new version of Hansel and Gretel at our Forest school story area.
