Becoming Scientists in P1We

17th Nov 2024

We have been enjoying our topic about People Who Help Us. This week we were thinking about the dentist and how dentists help us keep our teeth healthy. That got us thinking about what we can do to take care of our teeth. We talked about brushing our teeth and about limiting foods that are full of sugar that aren’t so good for our teeth.

We did an experiment using hard boiled eggs as our experimental ‘teeth’.  We placed one in water, one in a fizzy sugary drink, and covered one in toothpaste before placing it in the drink too. We predicted what might happen to each egg…there were even a few who predicted some of the eggs might explode! We waited for 48 hours before checking on our eggs to see what had happened.

The egg in water was just the same. The egg in sugary drink was very discoloured and brown. The egg in toothpaste placed in the sugary drink was almost unchanged.  We concluded that water is good to drink and sugary drinks are definitely not good for our teeth. We saw how the toothpaste protected the egg and agreed that we all need to brush our teeth 2 times a day.
